Philosophy

Macs are more expensive than Windows PCs, because they are better than Windows PCs. Macs have a higher up-front cost because they contain the most top-of-the-line cutting edge technology, are exceptionally well designed and built with unsurpassed quality. And that's just the hardware. OSX is the most straightforward, user-friendly operating system in the world. With proper maintenance and repairs, your Mac will last a decade or more.

History

I'm a life-long Mac user - my first Mac was a Performa 400 in the mid '90s. I began fixing computer hardware as a kid, kept doing it as I matured, and opened this business during college.

Olympia Mac Repair opened in 2009. At the time, it was the only Mac shop in the Olympia/Lacey area. Several other mac-related businesses have come and gone, including a Mac Store in the mall that has since closed - we've outlasted them all. Today, it is still the only Mac hardware repair and service shop in this area.  Having major repairs done on your Mac by Apple (nearest Apple Store is Tacoma) or Geek Squad means you're without your Mac for several weeks, while they ship it off to a centralized repair site in another state. By contrast, my repairs and services are done on-site in my West Olympia shop or on-site at your business, in a matter of days or less, for about half the cost.

Diagnosis and in-person examinations/consultations are free, and if your Mac cannot be fixed, you won't be charged.

Buying A New Mac?

I am in the business of repair - of keeping your things working. I have worked on and seen the insides of every single Apple product released in the last 20+ years. While the majority of Apple's products are long-lasting and extremely well engineered, nobody is perfect. There are a few...bad apples: computers and devices which cannot easily be disassembled/repaired when broken, or are unexpectedly expensive to find parts for. Likewise, there exist a few specific models which are exceptionally repairable, user-serviceable, and cheap to maintain. While I do not generally sell new or used Macs myself, If you're in the market for a new or used Mac, I would be happy to share my recommendations which should help you avoid those pitfalls and meet your exact computing needs.

Why I don't fix iPod Touches or iPads:

I do not fix iTouches, iPads or iPhones as a matter of principal. While the majority of Apple products are built to last and to be able to be repaired when the time comes, these devices generally are not. They are held together with glue, difficult and often dangerous/toxic to work on, and seem to be intended to be replaced when broken, not repaired. Even when taken to an electronics recycling center, devices in such facilities have to be disassembled and separated into their component parts by human workers. Having devices which are glued together, dangerous and non-repairable also tends to make them prohibitively expensive to recycle.

I am philosophically and ethically opposed to the use of a device meant to be thrown away when broken, as this will only serve to further pollute our world and deplete our limited planetary resources. Apple is not the only high-tech company which produces such devices, and not all Apple products are like this. Every time you buy a device, you are voting with your dollars. Please, only buy devices which have been engineered to be able to be repaired and recycled. With more conscious consumption, we all can help get electronics manufacturers back on track towards a sustainable, repairable and recyclable future.
